Roof Insulation

Bulk Insulation –  a  thick fibrous cmaterial with thermal properties that reduce (RETARDS) heat transfer into the house (Summer) or heat loss out of the room (winter).

Bulk insulation with time will become saturated with dust because of the air movement in the roof and moisture in the air. This causes the insulation to loose it’s thermal properties and basically conduct the heat flow without insulating anymore.

Reflective Insulation – Insulation that REFLECT the radiant thermal heat only. It is installed between the corrugated sheeting of a factory roof to block the heat transfer into a warehouse or factory. However where the product has a gap or gets torn the heat will radiate past the barrier.

Vermiculture

NEVER – My worm bin should never smell. The only smell should be a rich earthy soil smell. If there is an acid pungent smell then the bin is over fed and the worms cannot cope. What happens is that the excess food starts rotting, turns anaerobic and gives off a foul smell.

REMEDY – Mix in a bit of dry soil (preferably dry horse manure) into the top 100 mm layer of the bin. Cover with the felt and leave the bin till the worms have managed to process the food. Adding some “rock dust” the very fine dust from a crusher process will also help stabilize the PH.

If the ants find the bin and want to share in the available food a big problem arise. This is bound to happen at some stage.

REMEDY – The organic way would be to sprinkle coffee grounds around the bottom around the bin and inside on top. This won’t harm the worms; in fact they will love it. However the ants will eat it, swell up and die. An alternative more environmental un-friendly way would be to sprinkle some pesticide powder like “BLUE-DEATH” around the bottom of the bin.

The tendency unfortunately is always to over-feed the bin. Worms can only process their own bodyweight per day. If you have 500 Grams of worms that is the daily feed weight capacity.

BENCHMARK – The worms actually feed on bacteria not the organic material. If the food is cut into smaller bits or even liquidized it works better. Large lumps of food will take longer to process. When small lump like granular structures form on the top of the service you have got a good indication that the worms have processed the food and is ready for some more. Always mix the food when introduced into the top 50mm of soil.

Do not mix the bin up. The only time to move the soil is when you harvest the spend vermin-cast from the bottom or when you introduce food and it gets mixed in into the top layer.
